What Victoria and David Beckham's next move should be after Brooklyn's bombshell statement, crisis PR experts reveal
Victoria Beckham is said to be "on the floor, shocked to pieces" over her son Brooklyn Beckham's bombshell statement and concerned for what it will mean for her family.Sources close to the couple told The Mirror that Victoria is "shocked her son would do this" while she and David are said to be "worried this will be the end of Brand Beckham".Nine.com.au reached out to an expert in PR crisis management to weigh in on what David and Victoria's best next steps could be to protect "Brand Beckham" in the wake of the damning claims.Nick Owens, President of Corporate & Crisis Communications at Sefiani PR agency, says it would likely be advised the Beckhams "do what they can to shut the story down"."The Beckhams may want to make a simple statement or post acknowledging Brooklyn's comments but stay respectful, not denigrating him and signalling their intention to take the matter up with him privately," Owens says. Owens says it may be advised for the Beckhams to "refrain from further comment" and instead seek private assistance."It may be too late for the Beckhams to reconcile with Brooklyn but they would be urged to seek a circuit-breaker – some sort of mediation or process, leading to each party agreeing not to go public against the other," he adds. "This post threatens to puncture the veneer and would be unwelcome for David and Victoria."Owens expects Victoria and David "would have legions of legal and PR advisers" with whom they would be consulting closely and assumes the couple have "been planning for this precise scenario".Owens believes "the objective should be to remove this from the news cycle asap, which means not giving the whole issue more oxygen". "That's why the Beckhams should be avoiding tit-for-tat public comment."PR expert in crisis communication, Molly McPherson agrees.Speaking to Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo this morning on Today, she said: "It will behove them not to go directly, not to try and correct line-by-line the accusations of her being the mother and mother-in-law from hell."Right now they need to contain. It's all about containment, containing the brand and we'll see if they can do it with the family."She is confident, however, that David and Victoria will be able to handle it. "Posh and Becks they've been at this for a long time they came up in the tabloid age before it was social media so they know how to use and leverage the media," she says."There is no doubt that there is legal involved and they have lawyers but also crisis management."As for why Brooklyn decided to make this statement in the first place, Owens says: "It's hard to know exactly what's been going on behind the scenes but it seems Brooklyn must have been pushed to breaking point to post something like this."It will be the subject of a lot of watercooler conversations and people are going to take one side or another – presumably many will sympathise with Brooklyn."While it may be a PR disaster for the Beckham family, Owens says this could actually be a good move on Brooklyn's part. "This might actually help Brooklyn's personal brand," Owens says. "He'd be acting under advice too but it would have taken some guts to do something like this and he'll win some respect and plaudits for the actions he's taken."FOLLOW US ON WHATSAPP HERE: Stay across all the latest in celebrity, lifestyle and opinion via our WhatsApp channel.
