Look Up! JAS 39 Gripen Jets to Fly Over Prague on Wednesday

Prague residents will have the chance to see JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets flying above the city on Wednesday, July 22.

The aircraft will take part in a ceremonial event at the National Memorial on Vítkov.

The flyover is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and will be carried out as a training flight connected with the ceremony.

According to information from Prague 4 City Hall, the jets will approach the capital from the east, flying over areas including Běchovice, Dolní Počernice and Žižkov.

The aircraft will then turn south over Prague Castle before continuing their return route through Podolí, Nusle and Hostivař. After completing the flight over the city, the jets will head back to their base in Pardubice.

The route means residents in several parts of Prague may be able to see the aircraft, depending on weather conditions and visibility.

Military aircraft flights over the capital are relatively rare but not unusual. In March 2024, crowds gathered in central Prague to watch a large military flyover marking the 25th anniversary of the Czech Republic joining NATO.

That event included five fighter jets and an Airbus aircraft, which flew over landmarks including Charles Bridge. The fighter jets later returned to their bases, while the Airbus landed at Prague’s Václav Havel Airport.

The Czech Air Force regularly uses ceremonial flights to mark important national events and military anniversaries, while also serving as training exercises for pilots.
