Development Directors follow in second place with 199,417 CZK, while IT Directors take third position at 180,914 CZK.
Prague Won’t Raise Public Transport Fares, Even as Costs Grow

The Prague City Council has approved a new transport strategy that will shape the city’s public transport system from 2026 to 2030. The plan focuses on improving capacity, reliability and service quality across the Prague Integrated Transport (PID) network, which also connects to the Central Bohemian Region. Despite rising operational costs, the city has again ruled out any increase in public transport fares. This position remains unchanged even as the financial gap in the system continues to grow. Prague remains among the cheapest Czech cities According to the plan, Prague still has one of the lowest public transport costs among major Czech cities. With an annual pass, the daily cost of travel is roughly 10 CZK. Annual ticket prices in selected cities: Prague – 3,650 CZK Brno – 4,750 CZK Ostrava – 4,400 CZK Plzeň – 4,656 CZK Liberec – 3,990 CZK Growing gap between costs and revenues Behind the political decision to keep fares unchanged is a widening financial gap. In 2019, Prague set a goal for fare revenue to cover roughly a quarter of the operating costs of the PID system. That target is no longer being met. Last year, fare income reached a record 5.41 billion CZK,...

New Groovy Market Fest Brings “Barcelona Vibe” to Prague

A new open-air event inspired by Barcelona’s street culture is coming to Prague. Groovy Market Fest will take place on 1 August 2026 in Riegrovy sady, turning the park into a one-day urban market focused on food, design and music. The concept is built around a simple idea: slow down the pace of the city and create a space where people can spend time outdoors without a fixed programme or pressure to move between stages. The organisers describe it as a mix of market, social space and informal cultural gathering. The festival is divided into three main areas. Food Garden will bring street food concepts prepared on site, with an emphasis on simple recipes and fresh ingredients. Palm Street will focus on bakery products, small food producers and craft brands working with local and regional ingredients. The Design Zone will present independent designers, fashion labels and small creative studios with a focus on original production. Music will run throughout the day with DJs and a curated programme designed to support the atmosphere rather than dominate it. A signature drink prepared on site will also be part of the experience. According to co-founder Marek Novák, the goal is not to replicate...

Prague continues to grow steadily, with official data showing that the capital has already passed 1.4 million residents. According to the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ), the population of Prague stood at 1,405,551 at the end of March 2026. This figure includes 686,987 men and 718,564 women, meaning women accounted for 51.1 percent of the population. During the first three months of 2026, the city recorded a decline of 1,533 residents. At the end of 2025, the total stood slightly higher at 1,407,084. Different institutions, however, present a more complex picture of how many people actually live in the capital. The Institute for Planning and Development of the City of Prague (IPR) has previously estimated that the real number of residents, based on mobile data and long-term movement patterns, ranges between 1.1 and 1.4 million people. The difference stems largely from residence registration rules. The 2021 census counted 1,301,432 people with usual residence in Prague and 1,261,304 with permanent residence. IPR estimates that around 12 percent of people living in the city are not officially registered there, while a similar number are registered in Prague but live elsewhere. According to Matouš Hutník from IPR, this group includes mainly younger, single residents...

Scabies Infections Surge in Prague During First Half of the Year

Prague has recorded a sharp rise in scabies infections this year, with public health officials urging residents to recognize the symptoms early. According to the Prague Public Health Authority, 459 people were diagnosed with scabies during the first six months of the year. That compares with 300 cases during the same period last year, marking a notable increase in infections across the Czech capital. Despite the higher numbers, health officials stress that Prague continues to have one of the country’s lowest infection rates relative to its population. One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding scabies is that it is linked to poor personal hygiene. Doctors say this is false. The condition has affected people around the world for centuries and periodically becomes more widespread, regardless of living standards or social background. “The current increase reflects the high mobility of modern society rather than individual hygiene,” said Dr. Martina Marešová, head of the anti-epidemic department at the Prague Public Health Authority, in an official statement. Can You Catch Scabies on Public Transport? As case numbers rise, many Prague residents have questioned whether trams, buses and the metro pose a risk. According to health experts, the likelihood of becoming infected during a typical...

Prague audiences can watch an open-air production of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest on Štvanice Island on July 17 and 18, presented by the theatre company Mad and Merry Men. Directed by Gordon L. Schmitz, the production offers a new interpretation of Shakespeare’s final play. In this version, Shakespeare himself appears as a character, stepping into the story as he writes it and briefly taking on the roles of several characters throughout the performance. Get your ticket here. The company has previously staged productions including Baron Münchhausen Between the Stars, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, A Clockwork Orange, and Murder on the Orient Express. Set on a remote island ruled by the magician Prospero, The Tempest follows a story of revenge, forgiveness and reconciliation. The production combines Shakespeare’s original text with live music and an ensemble cast, using the island setting as a natural backdrop for the performance. The costume and set designers behind Baron Münchhausen Between the Stars have also worked on The Tempest. Live music inspired by medieval traditions will accompany the performance. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Mad And Merry Men; Theatre Company Prague (@themadandmerrymen) The event is designed as an...

Prague Enters Global Top Ten for Congress Tourism Market

Prague has entered the top tier of global congress tourism destinations, ranking sixth worldwide in the latest ICCA index. The city attracted more than 850,000 participants last year, confirming its position among the most active hubs for international meetings and conferences. According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), only Lisbon, Barcelona and Vienna are ahead of Prague. The Czech capital hosted roughly five thousand conferences over the past year, with the majority of delegates arriving from Europe and the United States. Interest from Asia has also been growing. The strength of Prague in this segment is linked to its hotel capacity and infrastructure. Many hotels in the city combine accommodation with conference facilities, which supports large-scale events. Industry representatives also point to safety as an increasingly important factor for organisers when selecting destinations. “Prague has a relatively good network of hotels, most of which have congress facilities. Prague also deserves this by being a safe destination. This is an increasingly strong motivating factor for visitors to come,” said Václav Stárek, president of the Association of Hotels and Restaurants. Congress tourism in Prague is coordinated by the Prague Convention Bureau. Its director Roman Muška says business events help stabilise...

More Than Cocktails: The Story Behind the Iconic Tretter’s Prague

For many expats in Prague, Tretter’s is far more than a cocktail bar. Over the years, the brand has grown into a collection of venues known for their atmosphere, elegance, and long-standing place in the city’s social life. Behind the brand is Michael Tretter, one of the most recognized names in Czech hospitality. During a recent conversation, he shared the story behind Tretter’s, its philosophy, and some lesser-known details that help explain its enduring popularity. “Our goal was to create places that leave a lasting impression,” Tretter says. “We wanted our venues to feel as though they had existed for decades—even when they were brand new.” That idea of timelessness has guided the company from the beginning. From interior design and music to lighting and service, every detail is carefully considered to create a sense of character and history. One of the most remarkable parts of the Tretter’s story is the American Bar inside Prague’s Municipal House. Hidden beneath the building’s marble staircase, the venue first opened in 1912 and is considered one of the oldest cocktail bars in Europe. Its original features have largely survived, including artwork by painter Mikoláš Aleš and historical design elements linked to the era...

Cult Berlin Fast Food Chain Burgermeister to Open in Prague

Following its success across Germany and Poland, the Berlin-based burger chain plans to enter the Czech market, with its first location expected to open in Prague either later this autumn or in early 2027. The story of Burgermeister is often described as a textbook Berlin success story. What began as a small stand in a disused public toilet booth under the U-Bahn tracks at Schlesisches Tor has grown into a franchise widely regarded as serving some of the city’s best burgers. Today, the company operates more than 30 locations and continues to expand. After growing across Berlin and Germany, Burgermeister recently entered Poland, opening in Szczecin and later in Łódź, with additional Polish cities planned. The next step is the Czech Republic, where the first Prague branch is expected as part of the company’s broader European expansion. The company’s long-term plan envisions up to 20 locations across the country. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Burgermeister (@burgermeister.official) Beyond Poland and Czechia, Burgermeister is also eyeing further international expansion, including the UK, Spain, and Scandinavia. Despite this growth, the concept remains unchanged, with production continuing centrally and no adjustments made to local preferences. “Every burger should...

Cheers to Prague: Two Venues Named Among Europe’s 50 Best Bars

The Czech cocktail scene has earned international recognition after Forbína and Alma were both included in the inaugural Europe’s 50 Best Bars ranking. The prestigious list places Forbína at No. 38 and Alma at No. 25, making them the only Czech venues to appear among the continent’s top 50 bars. The first-ever Europe-focused edition of the World’s 50 Best Bars ranking was unveiled during a ceremony in Amsterdam on June 30. The list was compiled by more than 300 bartenders, bar owners, journalists, and hospitality experts, who evaluated venues based on cocktail quality, creativity, service, atmosphere, and the overall guest experience. Forbína, located opposite Prague’s National Theatre, achieved the recognition less than two years after opening its doors. The bar’s concept blends cocktails with theatrical storytelling, drawing inspiration from famous playwrights, classic stage productions, and the world of theatre itself. Each drink comes with a story that bartenders share with guests, creating an experience that goes beyond the cocktail. Located on V Jirchářích Street, Alma has built an international reputation under bar manager Pavel Sochor, whose team regularly hosts guest shifts featuring some of the world’s leading bartenders. The venue has become known not only for its cocktail menu but...

More Than 120000 German Job Cuts Put Pressure on Czech Industrial Sector

Germany’s industrial slowdown is beginning to affect Czech factories, exposing how closely the two economies remain linked through supply chains, particularly in automotive and machinery production. According to consultancy EY, more than 120,000 jobs were cut in German industry in 2025, almost twice as many as a year earlier. The decline reflects weaker output, falling revenues and reduced confidence among German companies. EY analyst Jan Brorkhilker said German industry is facing a deep downturn, with companies adjusting production and staffing in response to weaker demand. Business associations in Germany, as reported by Reuters, expect further pressure on the labour market in 2026 as the economic slowdown continues. German manufacturers are dealing with several overlapping problems. Energy costs remain high after the European energy crisis, global demand has weakened, and companies face rising regulatory and transformation costs linked to decarbonisation and digitalisation. These factors are now feeding into hiring decisions. Surveys among German industry groups show that most companies expect further workforce reductions next year, while only a small share plan to expand. Radek Špikar from the Czech Confederation of Industry and Transport said the situation in Germany is a concern for Czech exporters. “We hope Germany will find a new...

The Czech retail market welcomed 16 new international brands in the first half of 2026, according to a report by Cushman & Wakefield. Fourteen of the brands opened their first Czech locations in Prague, while one launched in Ostrava and another in Pardubice. The food and beverage sector remained the strongest driver of expansion, accounting for seven new brands. One of the most high-profile openings was BOSS Café, which launched on Prague’s Na Příkopě Street next to the BOSS flagship store. The café concept currently exists in only a handful of cities worldwide, including London and Bangkok. Other newcomers included Slovak café Choco Boss, Ukrainian supermarket Best Market, Canadian confectionery Choco Choo, Italian sports nutrition retailer Volchem, German restaurant Home of Dumplings, and YO! Sushi, which opened its first Czech branch in Prague after its parent company entered the market last year with Sushi Circle. Fashion was the second most active category, with four new brands entering the market. Romanian accessories label Alisa Enco opened at the Mandarin Oriental Prague, while American fashion brand Kenneth Cole chose Westfield Chodov for its first Czech store. German menswear brand Digel debuted at Fashion Arena Prague Outlet, and Italian luxury label Ermanno Scervino...

Prague’s Václav Havel Airport handled 1,579,301 passengers in May, marking a 5.22 percent increase compared with the same month last year. From the beginning of the year until the end of May, total passenger numbers reached 6,526,218, representing a 7.54 percent year-on-year increase. One of the most notable changes in May was in country rankings. Italy became the most popular destination, narrowly surpassing the United Kingdom. A total of 177,925 passengers flew to Italy, compared with 177,764 to the UK, a difference of just 161 travellers. Spain followed with 155,388 passengers, then France with 106,849. Turkey, Germany and the Netherlands also remained among the most frequently chosen destinations. London remains the busiest city route Despite the country-level shift, London stayed the single most popular destination overall, with 115,178 passengers travelling from Prague. Paris followed with 73,576 passengers, while Istanbul recorded 63,394 travellers. Other major city routes included Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Milan, Copenhagen, Rome and Barcelona, confirming the strong concentration of demand in major European hubs. Outlook for the year In 2024, Václav Havel Airport handled more than 17.75 million passengers, approaching the pre-pandemic record of 17.8 million set in 2019.
Hidden in a Forest, This Is Prague’s Oldest Observation Tower

For many visitors, Petřín Hill is the obvious destination for panoramic views over Prague. Yet the city’s oldest observation tower stands in a completely different location. Hidden among the trees of Cibulka Forest Park in Prague’s Košíře district, this little-known landmark offers a quiet alternative to the capital’s busiest tourist attractions—and visiting it costs nothing. Built in 1820, the stone tower predates the famous Petřín Lookout Tower by decades. It formed part of a romantic English-style landscape park commissioned by Leopold Thun-Hohenstein, the Bishop of Passau, as part of the Cibulka estate. Designed as a place for leisure rather than spectacle, the park reflected the 19th-century fashion for picturesque gardens filled with architectural features and hidden corners. Unlike Petřín’s towering structure, the Cibulka observation tower rises only 13 meters above the ground. Its modest height means the viewing platform sits just above the surrounding treetops rather than soaring above the city skyline. Visitors climb a narrow spiral staircase before reaching views over Košíře, Motol, and parts of western Prague. Despite lying only a short walk from the busy Plzeňská Street, the forest park feels surprisingly peaceful. The absence of crowds makes it easy to enjoy the surroundings, whether for a...

Smog Alert Issued for Prague as Ozone Pollution Reaches Dangerous Levels

A smog alert was issued for Prague and the Central Bohemian Region after ozone levels exceeded safe limits. The warning, issued by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), remains in effect until further notice. It comes as the country continues to experience exceptionally hot weather, which has created ideal conditions for ozone formation. According to meteorologists, the alert was declared after monitoring stations recorded hourly average ozone concentrations above the information threshold of 180 micrograms per cubic meter. Forecasters expect similar levels to continue at some measuring stations, meaning the health warning is likely to remain in place. Ground-level ozone is not emitted directly into the atmosphere. Instead, it forms when pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons react under strong sunlight. Heatwaves often accelerate this process, leading to higher concentrations, particularly during the afternoon. Health officials advise people to avoid intense physical activity outdoors while ozone levels remain elevated. The recommendation is especially important for children, older adults, and people living with chronic respiratory illnesses, who are more vulnerable to air pollution. Exposure to high levels of ozone can irritate the lungs and mucous membranes. Common symptoms include coughing, burning eyes or nose, headaches, and a feeling of pressure in...

Extreme Heat and Holiday Schedule Slow Down Prague Public Transport System

Public transport in Prague is moving more slowly as high temperatures and a seasonal timetable combine to affect operations across the network. The Prague Integrated Transport system introduced widespread tram speed reductions over the weekend in response to record heat. The measures affect the entire city network. According to transport authorities, extreme temperatures cause overhead lines to expand and sag, which limits safe operating speeds. In some underpasses, trams are restricted to around 10 km/h. Across the wider network, the general limit has been reduced to 40 km/h as a precaution linked to track tension and safety conditions. Prague Public Transport Company spokesperson Daniel Šabík confirmed that the measures continue across the network. He said the reduced speed applies citywide, with even lower limits in underpasses and at selected crossings. Transport operators have also pointed to passenger comfort during hot weather, recommending metro travel where possible. In a public message, Prague Integrated Transport noted that underground lines remain less affected by heat, as they are shielded from temperature-related technical issues affecting surface transport. Alongside the heat-related restrictions, a summer timetable has been introduced. This results in longer intervals between services across trams, buses and metro lines. The seasonal schedule typically...

The Czech Republic already fulfils nearly all economic conditions required to adopt the euro, according to a new Convergence Report published by the European Commission. The report suggests that the remaining obstacles are no longer economic, but political and institutional. The report evaluates EU member states outside the euro area on their readiness to join the single currency. After Bulgaria joined the eurozone this year, 21 EU countries now use the euro. Denmark remains outside due to an opt-out agreement. The assessment therefore focuses on five countries: the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Sweden. The Czech Republic stands out among them. The Commission concludes that it meets three of the four main economic convergence criteria, placing it among the most prepared countries alongside Sweden. Inflation, debt and interest rates within limits Inflation has returned below the reference threshold after several years above target. In May, the annual average fell to 1.9%, below the benchmark level of 2.7%. The Commission expects it to remain within the required range through 2027. Public finances also comply with Maastricht rules. The general government deficit stood at 2.1% of GDP in 2025, while public debt reached 44.3% of GDP. Both figures remain below the...

Metro D Moves Ahead with Design Contest for Písnice and Pankrác

Prague’s Metro D project is entering another phase, with the city’s transport authority preparing to launch architectural and artistic competitions for two future stations. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) expects to announce the competitions in September, according to Deputy Mayor Jaromír Beránek, who oversees transport. One competition will focus on the complete interior design of the future Písnice station, while another will commission a major artwork for the Pankrác station. Officials held an introductory meeting for both competitions this week. The winning proposals are expected to be selected before the end of the year. For Písnice, DPP plans to organize an open competition that could attract architects and designers from abroad. The goal is to create the station’s overall interior appearance. In contrast, the competition for Pankrác will be more limited, with five invited artists competing to design a single artistic feature for the station. The city has already used similar competitions to shape several Metro D stations. Designs have previously been selected for Libuš, Pankrác D, Olbrachtova, Nádraží Krč, Nemocnice Krč, and Nové Dvory. After the Písnice competition is completed, DPP also plans to select designs for Náměstí Míru, Depo Písnice, and Náměstí Bratří Synků. Before work begins...

Canadian singer Garou will perform in Prague on 2 October 2026 at the Prague Congress Centre as part of his European “Best of” tour. The show marks his return to the city after a sold-out concert in 2023 and will feature a full big band arrangement combining his most popular songs with newer material. Garou remains one of the most recognisable voices in French-language music over the past two decades. Known for his rough, expressive tone and strong stage presence, he first reached international fame at the end of the 1990s and has maintained a loyal audience across Europe and Canada. Tickets are available via Ticketportal.cz Born Pierre Garand in Sherbrooke, Quebec, he grew up in Canada and studied music from an early age. Before his breakthrough, he performed in bars and small venues, building his reputation through live shows. His career changed in 1997 when he was cast by lyricist Luc Plamondon as Quasimodo in the musical Notre-Dame de Paris. The role brought him instant international attention and led directly to his solo career. His debut album Seul, released in 2000, became one of the most successful French-language records of its time. It was followed by a series of...

Prague Has 756 Cars for Every 1,000 Residents and the Number Is Still Rising

With roughly one million on-street parking spaces serving a city of 1.4 million people, streets in many neighborhoods increasingly resemble open-air parking lots. Experts say the problem is not driven by a single factor but by a combination of population growth, suburban expansion, changing lifestyles and decades of planning decisions. The Czech capital now has 756 registered passenger cars for every 1,000 residents. Thirty years ago, there were around 300 fewer vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants. While the number of registered cars briefly declined after reaching a peak in 2021, it has been climbing again ever since. Hundreds of Thousands Enter Prague Every Day Although Prague officially has around 1.4 million residents, its transport network serves far more people than that. According to anonymized and aggregated mobility data provided by O2 Dataclair, about 460,000 additional people travel into Prague on a typical busy weekday. In practical terms, the city’s daytime population grows by roughly one-third every working day. The data includes all forms of transport, but the additional demand also places heavy pressure on Prague’s road network. Planning Rules Encourage More Driving The city still applies minimum parking requirements for new developments. Residential projects generally must provide at least one parking...

Around one fifth of Czech weather stations recorded a tropical night from Friday into Saturday, with temperatures staying above 20 degrees Celsius until morning, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has said. Meteorologists say that a tropical night is recorded when the temperature does not fall below 20 degrees Celsius. On Saturday night, this threshold was reached at roughly one fifth of all measuring stations across the country. According to data from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), the phenomenon was observed nationwide, affecting lowland areas, higher elevations and even some mountainous locations, as well as major cities. In Prague, the warmest conditions were recorded in the city centre. At the Praha-Klementinum station, the temperature stayed above 23.7 degrees Celsius throughout the night, the ČHMÚ reported on Facebook. While the current conditions are notable, the highest recorded nighttime temperature in Czech history dates back to 8 August 2013 in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, where 27.2 degrees Celsius was measured. Forecasts suggest that warm nights will continue. On Sunday night, temperatures are expected to remain between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius, with little cooling after sunset. Meteorologists also warn that Monday could bring the highest concentration of tropical nights, as a partly cloudy sky associated...

Prague is preparing for another busy summer, with around 1.6 million visitors expected to arrive during July and August, according to estimates from Prague City Tourism (PCT). The figure represents an increase of roughly five percent compared with the same period last year, when approximately 1.5 million people visited the Czech capital. The latest outlook suggests that the city’s tourism sector will continue its steady recovery, supported by strong demand from both domestic and international travelers. The forecast is supported by figures from STR, the international hotel market data provider. During the first five months of the year, Prague hotels recorded an average occupancy rate of 71.6 percent, up 5.3 percent from a year earlier. Hotel prices have also continued to climb. The average room rate reached €120.55 per night, an annual increase of 7.7 percent. According to Prague City Tourism, the Czech capital is currently seeing faster growth in hotel performance than neighboring Vienna. Luxury accommodation has experienced even stronger demand. Occupancy in Prague’s high-end hotels increased by around seven percent year-on-year, while the average nightly room rate rose by €11, reaching €209. City officials view the trend as evidence that Prague is increasingly attracting higher-spending visitors. In recent...

Starting this winter, travelers flying from Prague will have two more direct destinations to choose from as Smartwings adds regular services to Bergen in Norway and Venice in Italy. The airline announced that the new connections will become part of its 2026/2027 winter schedule, with flights to Venice beginning on October 22 and the Bergen route launching on October 26. Passengers heading to Venice will be able to fly four times a week, with departures scheduled on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The route is expected to appeal to both weekend travelers and tourists visiting one of Italy’s most popular cities. A few days later, Smartwings will introduce direct flights to Bergen, Norway’s second-largest city and one of the main gateways to the country’s famous fjords. The route will operate twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, providing Czech travelers with a direct link to western Norway without the need for connecting flights. According to Michal Váňa, Sales Director at Smartwings, expanding the airline’s regular network remains a long-term priority. “We continue to strengthen Prague’s air connections with attractive European destinations. Bergen and Venice rank among the most popular tourist locations, and we believe these direct flights will be welcomed...

A taste of Vietnamese childhood and family tradition finds a new home in Prague. For the brothers behind Bamico, opening a Vietnamese sandwich shop was never simply about food. It was about identity and bringing a piece of home to the city they love. “We are two brothers, and the idea for Bamico was born out of pure exhaustion and nostalgia,” they explain. Growing up in the Czech Republic, they watched their parents dedicate their lives to entrepreneurship, often sacrificing family time in pursuit of building a better future. “We watched our parents work 16-hour days with almost no weekends,” they explain. “Bamico was born out of respect for their work ethic, but also from a desire to build something of our own.” Years later, after spending time abroad, the brothers found themselves experiencing a different kind of challenge. “When we lived abroad, we experienced a deep sense of isolation and homesickness,” they recall. Missing the flavors and atmosphere of their childhood, they began searching for a way to reconnect with their roots. The result was Bamico. At the center of Bamico’s concept is bánh mì, Vietnam’s iconic sandwich and one of the country’s most beloved street foods. For the...

Illusion Art Museum Prague (IAM Prague) hosted a vernissage on Wednesday, June 24, unveiling new works by South African artist Jonty Hurwitz, Berlin-based kinetic artist Florian Goerlitz, and Slovak digital artist Andrej Boleslavský. The new additions expand the museum’s collection of contemporary illusion, kinetic, and interactive art. Hurwitz presents two mirror anamorphoses, Echo and Rejuvenation in Bronze, inviting viewers to experience how form, reflection, and perspective can transform what we see. Goerlitz presents Infinity, a kinetic work that brings movement and mechanical precision into the museum’s growing collection of contemporary illusion art. Boleslavský contributes the digital artwork Liquid Mirror, which explores the relationship between image, movement, and perception through a responsive digital surface, where many moments coexist, sliding against one another. Since 2018, IAM Prague has become one of the city’s most distinctive interactive art attractions, combining visual illusion, Czech history, playful storytelling, and participatory installations. The museum recently received the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for the fifth consecutive year, reflecting consistently strong visitor feedback. The new works mark another step in the museum’s broader ambition: to operate not only as a visitor attraction, but as an active cultural venue that supports artists, hosts events, and creates new reasons...

The Czech Republic have been eliminated from the FIFA World Cup after losing 3–0 to hosts Mexico in their final Group A match in Mexico City. The Czechs finished bottom of the group with one point from three matches, having previously lost to South Korea and drawn with South Africa. Miroslav Koubek’s side started brightly and looked the more dangerous team for much of the opening half hour, with Denis Višinský and Michal Sadílek both going close. However, Mexico grew into the game before the break and took full control after halftime. Mateo Chávez opened the scoring in the 60th minute following a rapid counterattack, before Julián Quiñones doubled the lead six minutes later after a defensive mistake. Álvaro Fidalgo added a third in stoppage time to seal Mexico’s third consecutive group-stage victory. The result sends Mexico into the knockout rounds with a perfect record, while Czechia’s tournament ends at the group stage after a disappointing campaign that produced only a single point and no wins. A two-decade wait that ended too soon The Czech Republic hadn’t appeared at a World Cup since 2006, their first as an independent nation following the 1993 split of Czechoslovakia. That 2006 campaign in...

Holiday Costs Rise: Croatia No Longer the Cheap Seaside Option for Czechs

Cheap last-minute packages to the seaside are still available for Czech travellers, but the range of options is narrowing quickly. As temperatures in Czechia climb above 30 degrees Celsius, many people are deciding whether to wait for last-minute offers or secure their summer trip early. Current market data shows that discounted deals have not disappeared, but they are increasingly limited in scope and availability. Travellers who are open to changing destinations or departure dates can still reach Mediterranean beaches at relatively low cost. Those who insist on a particular resort, hotel standard or exact timing are facing a much smaller selection and higher prices. In the final weeks of June, some of the cheapest week-long packages to Bulgaria, Turkey or Greek islands can still be found at around 9,000 to 11,000 CZK per person. However, travel operators say these offers are no longer typical and are becoming exceptions rather than the rule. More common are all-inclusive stays in well-rated hotels, which during peak season are priced between 18,000 and 26,000 CZK per person. In many cases, the difference between budget offers and standard packages now exceeds 10,000 CZK per traveller. The pressure on household budgets is also shifting travel behaviour....

Prague Public Transport Switches to Holiday Schedule This Weekend

Prague’s public transport network will move to its annual summer schedule this Saturday, bringing longer waiting times on metro, tram and bus services. The seasonal timetable will remain in place until August 28, after which regular service frequencies will return across the city. Metro services will continue running throughout the summer but with reduced frequency during weekday rush hours. Passengers on Line A will see trains arriving 60 to 75 seconds less often than during the regular schedule. On Line B, intervals will increase by 40 to 60 seconds, while Line C services will be spaced 20 to 35 seconds further apart, depending on the time of day. At midday, trains on all three metro lines will operate every five minutes. Weekend services will generally run at intervals of seven and a half minutes. Tram passengers will also notice changes. Most routes will operate every ten minutes during weekday peak periods and every 12 minutes around midday. The city’s busiest tram corridors, including lines 9, 17 and 22, will continue running at roughly twice that frequency. Bus services will follow adjusted summer schedules as well, with longer intervals on weekdays and selected weekend routes. School bus services will be suspended...

New Prague Tram 52T Earns Global Design Prize

The new Prague tram Škoda 52T has received the Red Dot Award for product design, an international distinction that highlights strong industrial and user-focused design in global manufacturing. The jury evaluated the vehicle’s visual design, functionality and passenger comfort. Škoda Group developed the tram through its internal design team, creating a model tailored specifically for Prague’s public transport system. The aim was to combine a modern visual identity with the practical demands of daily city operation. Particular attention was given to the interior layout, passenger visibility and the distinctive front section of the vehicle, which defines its overall appearance in urban traffic. The design was developed with a focus on usability in dense city conditions. According to the company, the balance between engineering solutions and passenger experience played a key role in the award decision. Tomáš Chludil, head of industrial design at Škoda Group, said the project aimed to merge comfort, safety and visual clarity in a single transport solution, while maintaining a clear identity for the vehicle within the city network. The tram measures nearly 32 metres in length and offers 70 seats. It can carry more than 240 passengers and features a fully low-floor design for easier boarding....

From Local Café to Miss Universe 2026: The Story of Hues Kafe in Prague

Less than a year after opening its doors in Prague, Hues Kafe achieved a milestone few young independent cafés can claim. The café was selected as an official catering partner for Miss Universe 2026 in Prague, successfully serving approximately 300 guests, including around 200 adults and 100 children. For founder Sameer Shaikh, the moment felt surreal. “When we received the opportunity, we had only two days to prepare. It was a huge responsibility, but also a proud moment for our entire team.” Located in the heart of Prague, Hues Kafe has quickly built a reputation for its colorful presentation, specialty coffee, and unique Indian-European brunch concept. Unlike many cafés that rely on pre-prepared food, dishes at Hues Kafe are made fresh to order, combining flavors from different cultures while maintaining a focus on lighter, oil-free cooking. One of the café’s distinguishing features is its coffee program. Sameer personally sources and develops unique blends, including combinations of Indian, Brazilian, and Colombian beans. His goal is not only to serve quality coffee but also to introduce more people to Indian coffee, which remains relatively unknown compared to many Latin American varieties. The café itself was built entirely through personal savings accumulated during...

Housing and food prices in the Czech Republic are nearing Western European levels, while salaries continue to lag. New data published by Eurostat highlight a growing imbalance in the Czech economy. While average price levels remain below those in much of Western Europe, some of the most important expenses facing households have nearly caught up with richer countries. Overall, prices in the Czech Republic stand at 89.4 percent of the European Union average. That remains lower than Germany, where prices reach 108.3 percent of the EU average, and Austria at 113 percent. However, the broader figure masks substantial differences between sectors that directly affect everyday life. Housing is the clearest example. The cost of housing, energy, and related household services in the Czech Republic has reached 107.1 percent of the EU average. Germany records 113.9 percent and Austria 113.4 percent, leaving only a relatively small gap between Czech households and those in Western Europe. The contrast with neighboring countries to the east is striking. Housing-related costs amount to just 52.2 percent of the EU average in Poland and 80.4 percent in Slovakia. This means Czech residents now face housing expenses that are far closer to German levels than to those...

The latest escalation between the two political opponents has ended up in the country’s constitutional court, which is expected to take up the matter on Wednesday. Czech President Petr Pavel on Tuesday said that he had filed a lawsuit against the government, challenging Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s decision to not include him in the government delegation attending the NATO summit in Ankara in July. The competency suit, which was lodged with Czechia’s Constitutional Court, asks for clarity on who has the authority to decide whether the head of state may attend the NATO summit. The court is due to take up the matter during its plenary session on Wednesday. In a statement, Pavel argued Babiš was trying to “exclude” him from the summit, and thus “limiting the role granted to him by the Constitution.” The president pointed out that his predecessors had attended all previous NATO summits, and that he had been present at every one of the alliance’s gatherings since he took office in 2023. After months of contention over who would represent Prague in Ankara, Babiš on Monday announced the head of state could not join the official delegation because “this summit will be different from previous ones.”...

Czech Republic Enters Race to Host European AI Gigafactory

The Czech Republic has taken a major step toward joining Europe’s growing artificial intelligence infrastructure network after the government approved support for a bid to host a European AI Gigafactory. At its meeting on Monday, the cabinet authorized the Ministry of Industry and Trade to sign a joint procurement agreement with the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, opening the door for Czech partners to compete for one of the EU’s flagship AI projects. The planned AI Gigafactories are intended to provide Europe with powerful computing infrastructure capable of developing, training and operating advanced artificial intelligence models. The facilities would serve as large-scale AI data centers, helping reduce Europe’s dependence on technology and computing resources from outside the continent. Under the proposed model, construction of the Czech facility would be financed by private investors. The state would not directly fund the project but would commit to using part of the computing capacity if the Czech bid is selected. According to the government, this would give public institutions and domestic organizations access to advanced computing resources under favorable financial conditions. Officials argue that hosting an AI Gigafactory could bring benefits beyond technology development. The project could attract substantial private investment, create opportunities for research...

Lidl Czech Republic has launched a seasonal outdoor terrace at the Prague Exhibition Grounds in Stromovka, introducing a new concept that combines food, drinks and community events in one location. The temporary venue is situated next to the park’s public grilling area, allowing visitors to purchase ingredients on-site and prepare them at nearby grill stations. The terrace offers a selection of Lidl’s private-label products commonly found in its stores. Visitors can buy snacks, ice cream and barbecue ingredients directly at the venue. Draft Argus beer and non-alcoholic radlers are also available. Customers using the Lidl Plus mobile application can access discounted prices. A small draft beer costs 15 CZK through the app, while a half-liter beer is available for 25 CZK. Lidl said the beer-serving area is clearly marked as restricted to adults, with staff checking identification documents when necessary. A dedicated Bellarom Café section has also been created within the terrace. The café serves espresso, cappuccino, iced coffee and other coffee drinks. Lidl Plus users can take advantage of lower prices on selected beverages. The menu also includes lemonades, iced tea, prosecco and additional refreshments. The company plans to host a range of activities throughout the summer. The program...

Across the city, major projects are underway or in the pipeline that promise to make the Czech capital a better place to live. Tram to Wenceslas Square Where else is better to start than Wenceslas Square. It’s laid out by Charles IV in the 14th century, witness to countless historical events, and today a hub of tourism and commerce with some 1,600 companies and hundreds of shops, hotels, and restaurants. Right now, it looks like a construction zone. The reason: a new tram line that will transform both the square and public transport across the city. Along with the tracks, the public space will be restored with new greenery, benches, and a retention tank already built underground to capture rainwater for the newly planted trees. Metro exits will also be redesigned, and the upper part of the square will connect with the lower part, which was already reconstructed in 2023 with new paving, benches, and a fountain designed by Jakub Cigler’s studio. The new line aims to relieve pressure on the congested city center and offer a redundant route when disruptions hit I. P. Pavlova or Ječná Street. It will also provide a missing link to Vinohrady. The New Savarin...

With two locations now running in Prague, including its newer space in Palmovka, Bohemia Boards & Brews is entering a new phase focused less on expansion and more on building its role as a social hub. This summer, the board game café is placing renewed focus on both venues and the role they play in the city’s social life. We spoke with founder Douglas Kaufman about how the concept has evolved and why it still resonates today. Bohemia Boards & Brews combines a café, bar, and a library of hundreds of board games, built around the idea of a shared “third place” — somewhere outside home and work where people can meet and spend time together. “The concept of the board game café was just catching on in the US and Canada, spearheaded by Snakes & Lattes in Toronto,” Kaufman says. “It offered a place with a cool vibe and friendly atmosphere, serving food and drinks while giving people a space to play games.” Before this model existed in Prague, he recalls, options were limited and often improvised. “If you wanted to play games and didn’t want to go to someone’s house, you either went to a pub with your...

Hungry for Answers? New Platform Lets Users Vote for Prague’s Best Dishes

Most restaurant guides try to answer the same question: which restaurant is the best? A new Prague-based project called Voutie is taking a different approach. Instead of ranking restaurants as a whole, it focuses on something much more specific: individual dishes. The idea began with a simple conversation at home. One evening, the founder’s wife was craving sushi and asked a familiar question: where can you get really good sushi in Prague? “It made me realize how often I was asking the same thing myself,” the founder says. Whether it is sushi, pizza, kebab, burgers or lasagne, many people are not necessarily looking for the city’s best restaurant overall. They just want to know where to find the best version of the food they feel like eating that day. The concept is straightforward. Each registered user receives one vote per category and can assign it to the restaurant they believe serves the best version of that particular dish. If they later discover a place they like more, they can move their vote. One of the best things about Voutie is that every place on the platform is there because it is someone’s favourite for a specific dish. The goal is...

Prague Approves Return of Radecký Statue to Malostranské náměstí

A monument removed from Prague’s streets more than a century ago could soon return to one of the city’s most historic squares. Prague city councilors have approved plans to bring back the statue of Austrian field marshal Josef Václav Radecký of Radč to Malostranské náměstí in the Lesser Town. The decision also authorizes the city to ask the Ministry of Culture to release the original sculpture, which is currently housed in the Lapidarium of the National Museum. The monument stood in the square from 1858 until 1919, when the newly established Czechoslovak state removed symbols associated with the Habsburg monarchy. Following its dismantling, the statue was transferred to museum storage, while the pedestal was later removed as well. The return project has been discussed for years, supported by the Radecký Society and officials from Prague 1. City representatives now hope the monument can become part of the long-planned redevelopment of Malostranské náměstí, although a completion date for the reconstruction has not yet been announced. Costs are expected to range between 15 million and 30 million Czech crowns. The final amount will depend largely on whether the Ministry of Culture agrees to provide the original artwork. If not, a replica would...

From Seven Hours to 60 Minutes: New Flights Between Prague and the Tatras

Travel between Prague and the Tatras region in Slovakia will soon be quicker, as a popular low-cost airline is launching a new route connecting the Czech capital with Poprad in northeastern Slovakia. Until now, the only way to travel between these two destinations was by train or coach. Currently, the only air link between Slovakia and Prague has been from Košice Airport, with daily Ryanair flights. Wizz Air plans to launch the new service in late October, with departures on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The flight will take about one hour, making it much faster than the seven-hour train ride or the even longer bus journey. Many people from eastern Slovakia work or study in Prague. Starting in October, they will be able to make the trip for €24.99. With eastern Slovakia now gaining another direct air connection to Prague, people are wondering when a similar route will open between Prague and the Slovak capital. Ryanair recently said they are open to this idea, but need to analyse the data first. The last direct flight between the two capitals operated in 2019. At present, travellers from both Prague and Bratislava can use the flights between the Austrian capital and Prague....

How This School in Prague Rethinks Kindergarten Through Nature and Movement

With its setting on the edge of Klánovický Forest in Prague-East, Unicorn School has developed a private kindergarten environment where early education is closely tied to nature, movement and individual attention. Housed in a family villa with a garden, playground and heated swimming pool, the facility brings together structured preschool learning and a day-to-day rhythm shaped by outdoor experience. The kindergarten and children’s group focus on small learning communities, where children are guided according to their own pace of development rather than a uniform classroom model. Teachers with long-term experience in early childhood education work with an emphasis on stability, trust and close cooperation with parents. A significant part of the programme takes place outside. The proximity of the forest allows for frequent walks, outdoor activities and seasonal learning, which are integrated into the daily schedule rather than treated as occasional excursions. The approach reflects elements of forest kindergarten practice, where direct contact with nature is considered part of the learning process. Inside, Unicorn School combines several educational frameworks. Montessori-inspired principles are used alongside Free Flow Learning and the Good Start Method®. Development is monitored through iSophi® diagnostics, which help adjust activities to individual needs. Early numeracy is introduced through...

Summer in Prague is traditionally a time for festivals, open-air events, and nightlife venues, all of which attract visitors with special programs. Among them is Roxy, which is kicking off the new season with an expanded lineup of events, new production elements, and confirmed acts for the fall season. The club on Dlouhá Street has been shaping the city’s electronic music scene since 1992, and earlier this year it received the Bass Award for best club in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This summer, the venue is entering the warmer months with a packed schedule designed for regulars and newcomers alike. Three recurring nights form the backbone of the program. Mainstage Party and Techno Night take over Fridays and Saturdays, while DNB Wednights, held every other Wednesday, bring drum and bass enthusiasts together in the middle of the week. DNB Wednights start at 8 p.m., while the club’s regular Friday and Saturday events begin at 11 p.m. Alongside its regular program, Roxy is preparing a series of themed nights that push the energy even further. Techno [Rave] and Hard Dance editions promise a heavier soundtrack and a different atmosphere for those looking for something beyond the club’s standard format. Music...

EU Plans to Extend Free Roaming to Six More Balkan Countries

Travelers heading to the Western Balkans could eventually use their phones without worrying about extra roaming charges, as the European Union moves forward with plans to expand its roaming zone beyond its current borders. The European Commission is working on a proposal that would bring six Western Balkan countries — Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia — under the same roaming framework currently used across EU member states and participating European countries. If the plan is approved, residents and visitors would be able to make calls, send text messages and use mobile data in those countries under conditions similar to those they already enjoy throughout much of Europe. The process, however, is still at an early stage. While the Commission has expressed support for the expansion, the proposal must first receive approval from EU member states before negotiations can begin. Earlier this year, the Commission asked the Council of the European Union for authorization to open formal talks with the six Western Balkan partners. Once approved, separate agreements would need to be negotiated with each country. According to the Commission, successful negotiations would create the legal framework necessary for the Western Balkans to join the EU...

Coca-Cola is marking a major milestone in Czechia this year. The company has been producing its beverages locally for 55 years, growing from a niche product available only to a select few during the communist era into one of the country’s most widely consumed drinks. According to company figures, Coca-Cola’s Czech facilities produced 415.9 million liters of beverages in 2025 alone. When licensed production first began in the country in 1971, annual output stood at around 18.4 million liters. The story of Coca-Cola in Czechia began before local manufacturing existed. Many Czechs first encountered the drink at the end of World War II through American soldiers stationed in Europe. During the communist period, however, access remained limited. Bottles were mainly sold through Tuzex stores, which specialized in foreign goods, or in hotels catering to foreign visitors. A turning point came in 1971, when licensed production using the original Coca-Cola concentrate was launched in Modřice, near Brno. That move established the foundations for what would eventually become one of the company’s key operations in Central Europe. Another important chapter followed after the fall of communism. In 1993, Coca-Cola opened a production facility in Prague’s Kyje district, which has since become the...
