Not Ready for Summer to End? 3 Places to Take the Kids Before August Ends

Not Ready for Summer to End? 3 Places to Take the Kids Before August Ends

The end of the summer holidays is in sight. While school supplies, pencil cases and sports shoes are already making their way onto shopping lists, there are still a few days of summer left to enjoy.

Before the September school routine kicks in, here are three ways to make the most of the final days of August with the family.

Letni Letna

When: 12–31 August
Where: Prague, Letenské sady

Letenské sady is taking on a new look until 31 August, transforming into a colourful festival village. The Letní Letná Festival isn’t just about evening acrobatics for adults. It also offers a programme for younger visitors called Letní Letná for Children.

From morning until late afternoon, the huge children’s tent comes alive with fairy-tale performances and other activities. Kids can take part in creative and juggling workshops, explore an interactive play area made from recycled materials or take a ride on the iconic hand-carved wooden carousel.

Most of the children’s activities take place under the festival tents, so an unexpected rain shower won’t disrupt the day.

The festival also offers a “Night Watch” childcare service for children aged four and up. Parents can enjoy the evening programme while experienced entertainers look after their children.

Crystal Valley Week

When: 24–29 August
Where: Liberec and the surrounding area

Fancy a trip beyond Prague at the end of August? Head north to Liberec from 24 to 29 August, when the city hosts Crystal Valley Week, a celebration of Czech glassmaking and jewellery.

This year’s theme focuses on the interconnection of cultures, with the Czech glass bead at the centre of the programme. Children can also enjoy a free ride aboard the special Crystal Tram, which has been decorated this year to resemble a long-distance train.

There are plenty of opportunities to make your own jewellery from glass beads, with workshops and craft sessions taking place throughout Liberec for both children and adults.

F.O.O.D. Picnic

When: Sunday, 30 August, 11:00–19:00
Where: Prague, Ladronka Park

On the last Sunday of the summer holidays, skip cooking lunch and head to the F.O.O.D. Picnic in Prague’s Ladronka Park. The popular event returns for its 16th edition this year.

Entry to the festival grounds is free, with 120 food and farm stalls to explore, including food trucks. There is also a large children’s zone with games and creative workshops, as well as a raffle for younger visitors.

It’s a family-friendly way to spend the final Sunday of the holidays, combining food, activities and a relaxed atmosphere before the new school year begins.
