'Knew what they were getting into': Lawyer weighs in on Kyle Sandilands' potential legal stoush with ARN
The saga between Kyle Sandilands, Jackie 'O' Henderson and ARN is far from over.Lawyer Peter McGirr weighed in on the situation on Today on Thursday morning, with host Karl Stefanovic and explained that it's an "interesting case" that's garnered a lot of attention. "I believe, and this is only my view, that ARN were trying to get out of this contract," he said. Watch the full clip above. "You know, we were talking a significant amount of money that the contract was signed for and I believe that they may have been looking for any way to get out of that particular contract."Because the contract was there, eight years to run on it, another 80 million for him." Sandilands contract was terminated by ARN, and the shock jock released a statement on Wednesday morning announcing that he did not "accept it". McGirr believes that ARN would have lawyered up before they made the move to end his contract, although explained the difficult thing is "everyone's got a different opinion, depending on who their client is." "That's the difficulty I believe ARN may have." McGirr explained that Sandilands has made comments like the one that started it all, causing Henderson to walk out of the studio last month, plenty of times in the past. "That was part of his brand, he was a real shock jock in all essence," he added. "Then they've turned around and said well hang on, we're gonna get you for this breach… it just has a bad smell about it." McGirr believes that this court case is going to get very expensive, and the main winners out of it are going to be the lawyers. "When people start fighting with emotion, and on principle, this court case could run for a long time," he said. Stefanovic asked if a settlement would be the most obvious way to go about it. "Cool heads, sit down, work this out," McGirr said. "Kyle's great at what he does, he's a once in a generational shock jock, they knew what they were getting into with him."I would recommend everyone take a step back and work this out, but as we know, when lawyers are involved, certainly the bills start rolling and people start fighting on principle, it can get very messy."In Sandilands' statement he added that he is now leaving the situation to his lawyers to handle."I've got a contract until 2034. I've got rights under that contract. And ARN hasn't honoured the contract. So, it's over to my lawyers," read the statement.ARN also released a statement to the ASX."ARN Media Limited advises that it has issued a notice of termination of contract to Mr Kyle Sandilands and Quasar Media Services Pty Ltd (Quasar Media)," the statement read."As a result, the Kyle and Jackie O show will no longer be presented."This decision follows the Company's ASX announcement on 3 March 2026 which outlined that ARN had provided written notice to Mr Sandilands and Quasar Media stating that it considered Mr Sandilands' behaviour during the broadcast of 20 February 2026 to constitute serious misconduct and a breach of ARN's services agreement with Quasar Media, under which Mr Sandilands presents the Kyle and Jackie O show."As noted in the 3 March 2026 announcement, Mr Sandilands was given 14 days to remedy the breach."FOLLOW US ON WHATSAPP HERE: Stay across all the latest in celebrity, lifestyle and opinion via our WhatsApp channel.
