Fire During C-Section at Bulovka Hospital Leaves Woman Seriously Burned

A woman suffered serious burns during an emergency cesarean section at Prague’s Bulovka Hospital on Aug. 25, hospital spokeswoman Eva Stolejda Libigerová said.
The cesarean was performed because of an acute obstetric complication. The woman’s condition is now stable and she does not require intensive care, the hospital said. She is recovering in a standard ward with her newborn.
The hospital is investigating the incident as part of its internal procedures for reviewing patient safety and the quality of medical care. It said it would take appropriate measures once the investigation is complete.
Fire broke out during surgery
According to information obtained about the incident, medical staff were attempting to control bleeding toward the end of the operation when a fire broke out involving a surgical device.
The device was reportedly being used shortly after the patient’s skin had been treated with a disinfectant.
The woman suffered second- and third-degree burns to her inner thighs, sides, lower abdomen and genital area, according to the available information.
Two days after the operation, she was transferred to the Burns Medicine Clinic at University Hospital Královské Vinohrady for treatment. She was later returned to Bulovka Hospital’s postpartum ward.
The circumstances surrounding the fire, including how it started and whether established safety procedures were followed, are being examined by the hospital.
Previous incident at Bulovka maternity clinic
The hospital’s gynecology and obstetrics clinic was also the site of a serious medical error in March 2024.
In that case, staff mistakenly identified two patients of Asian origin. A pregnant woman who had arrived for a routine examination was incorrectly subjected to a curettage procedure, resulting in the loss of her pregnancy.
An internal investigation concluded that two employees had violated established procedures and internal rules. The hospital subsequently ended its cooperation with one of them.
Police also investigated the case on suspicion of negligent bodily harm but ultimately brought no charges.
The woman later reached a settlement with the hospital worth 2.3 million Czech crowns. One of the employees involved lost her job.
