'Stinging critiques': Liza Minnelli shares 'deep inadequacy' she felt growing up with megastar mother

Years later, I wonder if I’ve fully risen above it.”In her memoir, Minnelli – who turns 80 this month – recounts how she broke free from her dysfunctional family at 16 and moved to New York to make it as a singer and actor.But that was not before enduring a troubled childhood, stained by the realities of navigating life with a drug-addicted mother.Garland had been in active addiction to various substances throughout her career, culminating in her untimely death by overdose at the age of just 47.For a daily dose of 9honey, subscribe to our newsletter here.Minnelli learned early on her mother had felt challenged – even threatened by – her burgeoning stage and screen career, initially not supporting her ambitions to pursue them at all."Mama was initially sceptical," she admitted."Despite imagining my name on a marquee, she did try at first to steer me away from the bright lights.
