French prosecutors launched an investigation into claims that luxury eating clubs are flouting COVID-19 restrictions.
It follows the airing Friday evening of an undercover report by network M6, which confirmed unmasked friends enjoying champagne meals in what seems to be an upmarket restaurant in Paris.
One individual, launched as an organizer of the events and recognized in numerous media as superstar Pierre-Jean Chalençon, says within the footage “I’ve dined this week in two or three eating places which might be so-called clandestine eating places, with a certain number of ministers.”
Chalençon’s assertion was simply “humor” and it’s to be taken with a “sense of the absurd,” his lawyer later told Agence France-Presse.
Nevertheless, the Paris prosecutor’s workplace launched a legal investigation Sunday, trying to determine breaches of well being laws and monitor potential organizers and attendees. France this weekend imposed fresh nationwide coronavirus restrictions.
Interior minister Gérald Darmanin tweeted: “I requested Paris police to verify the accuracy of the reported information to be able to — if they're verified — cost the organizers and the members of those clandestine dinners.”
Junior Minister for Citizenship Marlène Schiappa said: “If ministers or members of parliament have breached guidelines, then they have to be fined and penalized like several citizen.”
